The foundation is pleased to announce the following two grants:
- A grant to Houston Grand Opera of Houston, Texas, to help support the production of a new opera, Prince of Players, by composer-librettist Carlisle Floyd. Adapted from Jeffery Hatcher’s play Compleat Female Stage Beauty, the opera tells the story of Edward Kynaston, the last of the “boy players” who portrayed female roles onstage in Restoration England. Prince of Players will premiere in the Wortham Theater Center’s Cullen Theater in March 2016.
- A grant to Creative Ammo, Inc., of New York City, to assist in the Downtown Urban Theater Festival’s production of Spades, by J. E. Robinson. The play, set during the Harlem Renaissance, examines the work and sexuality of four African-American writers: Langston Hughes, Wallace Thurman, Richard Bruce Nugent, and Rudolph Fisher. Spades will be performed at the HERE Arts Center, 145 Avenue of the Americas, Manhattan, on Saturday, May 23, at 8:30PM.
