The Brown Foundation offers grants to
production companies to offset expenses in producing theatrical works (plays,
musicals, operas, choral works, orchestral works with text), film and video. All
works must be based on, or inspired by, history and present the Gay and
Lesbian life in a positive manner. Grants, usually of $1,000.00, are available
through July, 2008 and may be used toward any aspect of a production.
EACH SUBMITTED WORK MUST:
1. Be an original play (comedy or drama) or an original
musical work with text, for example: choral music, song cycle, theater work,
instrumental or orchestral work with soloists and/or chorus. The text for
a musical work may be original, an adaptation, a translation or a direct setting
of other works of prose, poetry, or drama, published or not. If another
writer’s work is utilized, the composer must prove copyright clearance of the
text.
2. Present the gay and lesbian lifestyle in a positive manner.
3. Be based on history. This does not mean that only works based
on historical fact will be accepted, but rather that some historical person,
culture, event, or work of art be the direct inspiration for the work. You
may think your affair with the Russian Ballet dancer was historic, but it doesn’t
count.
